about

Mike writes “The TNMC occupies a very space in my heart as well as in the history of the Mike Ross Band. From the first time I visited the Coulsdon venue (to guest with Jack Hutchinson’s band) and second the time when I played guitar for Irish soul singer Amanda St John I was dying to get my own band up onto ‘The Boss’ Richard Dunning’s stage and we finally made it early in 2017. I’ll let him tell you all about that first show at the Hooley venue….”

"Yesterday afternoon as I was clearing the social club, moving the stage out of storage and setting up the PA and lighting I was seriously questioning my own sanity and asking myself if this was all worthwhile. Then The Tuesday Night Music Club started to fill and at precisely 8:30 Darren Lee, Stevie Watts and Mike Ross stepped onto that stage and from the first note they played answered my questions with a resounding yes.

There's something very special happens when these three play together. They don't try to impress with cascades of notes, they don't batter down your barriers with volume, they don't demand audience participation... But, seemingly effortlessly, they draw you in and every note and strike of a drum is there for a reason. It's all about the songs - and what songs! Culled from two of Mike's albums, 'Spindrift' and 'Jenny's Place', that first set had us entranced. In fact if the show had stopped there most would have thought they'd had their money's worth. But then came the second set and almost unbelievably they turned it up a notch. This was of course aided by Jack J Hutchinson making his debut with The Mike Ross Band. Now that stage was filled with so much talent it could so easily have lost its focus. But Jack gelled so well and his guitar playing and tone complimented that of Mike to such a degree that jaws started to drop around The Club. Jack didn't steal the stage - he just added to something we didn't think could have got better.

The night passed far too quickly - and all I heard (from at least five regulars of The Club independently) was 'that may well have been the best night ever'. Quite something for people to be saying when we're into our third year of putting on shows!

So, is all the work worth it? Of course it is! And to answer your question - yes, they'll be back!

Words really can't do justice to what we experienced last night but my thanks to everyone that once again filled The Club to bursting and to Simon of EQ Audio for the crystal clear sound”.

And then in May of 2018 we returned for our second headline TNMC show at the (now full-time) Coulsdon venue. This time Richard wrote…..

“When Mike Ross comes to town we really should have learned to expect the unexpected - in a very good way.
Taking the stage with Darren Lee on drums and Stevie Watts on keyboards he started the night with a number so new that even Stevie hadn’t heard it before! It was quite evident from thereon that, after his recent visit to record in Nashville, Mike has a lot of ideas and avenues to explore. And those ideas and avenues were touched upon and, in some cases, fully explored during the next two and a half hours… Yes that’s right, two and a half hours during which Mike didn’t leave the stage. Instead the traditional mid show break was replaced with a solo acoustic set during which we were treated to a glimmer of the fruits of those recording sessions (including an intriguing duet with Elles Bailey - though obviously this version was sans Elles!). But it wasn’t all new music and, when the band returned to the stage, the assembled faithful were also treated to storming takes on their favourites including ‘Harpo’, ‘Dakota Red’, ‘Coffeecan Telephone’ and a version of ‘Loveslide’ that had the audience on their feet demanding more. There followed a blasting ‘Bamboozled’ before Mike, Stevie and Darren finally left the stage.

Watching Mike really is a quite special experience. One can’t quite place him in a genre as he skips between Blues, Southern Rock, Country and Psychedelia seemingly with great ease, quite often combing them to great effect. And, while the songs always take centre stage, his guitar playing is fascinating - particularly in those moments you can see him getting lost in the music. Let us not forget though that the stage was also filled with the overbrimming talent of Darren Lee holding down an ever changing beat and Stevie Watts not only playing some stunning keyboard parts but also taking the part of the bass player with a rock steady left hand. The three of them together really do make up one hell of a band!"

The 21 track (!) live album presented here is formed mainly of tracks recorded at the 2017 appearance (with several tracks featuring guitar from Jack H). On our return in 2018 we played many of the same songs again so I’ve not duplicated them here, just added any that we didn’t play the first time including the short solo acoustic set Richard mentions. Lastly I have added the 2018 version of Harpo as technical problems mean that approximately half of the version we played on our first visit wasn’t recorded. I loved putting together and I hope you enjoy listening to it!
