about

Road Case #2 - the second episode in an ongoing 'bootleg' series of live recordings.....

The spring and early summer period of 2018 was particularly fruitful for Mike. As well as the usual packed touring schedule, he laid down a total of over 30 new songs in three different sessions over a 5 week period from mid April to early June. In this live set, the second in the ongoing 'Road Case' series of live recordings, we find the MRB returning to The Latest Bar in Brighton on the night of the 24th May 2018. Only days after arriving home from a long Spanish tour Mike, Ricky & Darren joined forces with Stevie Watts (organ) and Jade Danielle Williams (piano & BV's) to deliver a blistering live set of MRB favourites such as Harpo and Ran Through Here as well as showcase new material including Lily & Grow In Your Garden (both of which debuted on The Clovis Limit Pt.1 the following April). Also premiering on this live album are the MRB's spine-tingling electric workout through Leviathan (the solo version of which can be found on RHR's debut Mahogany Drift) and swamp blues relationship romp The Only Place You Ever Take Me Is Down. A few days after the performance captured here Mike & Darren headed into Brighton's Electric studios where they laid down no fewer than 23 songs - most of RHR's Mahogany Drift was recorded in these sessions as well as two songs for The Clovis Limit Pt.1 and 12 tracks which will make up The Clovis Limit Pt.2, releasing in October 2020. Of particular note on this night are the spine tingling jams in' Harpo' & 'Ran Through Here' as well as what Mike describes as the 'definitive' live version of Spindrift fave 'Lazy'. There's also a rollicking, rolling Cajun version of 'Don't Worry Baby, Just Call #1'. This is the sound of a live band at top touring 'match fitness'.

Manning the recording console on the night (and subsequently mixing the album) we find Ashley Slater, Canadian-born American trombone player & erstwhile Freak Power member.

Amongst other things, this release is notable as it features the incredible Jade Danielle Williams who joined Mike & the band in 2018 to supply beautiful backing vocals & piano.
